About

Driven by Passion,
Defined by Storytelling

I’m Jay, a freelance automotive and motorsport photographer based in Perth, Western Australia, and the founder of Downshift Media. I have experience capturing automotive culture and motorsport events and am available for national and international assignments.

It was as a child, riding in the passenger seat of my dad’s R34 Skyline, that I discovered a fascination with sports cars. The sound, the speed and the sculpted lines of the bodywork all shaping an interest that has only deepened over time.

In my early twenties, I purchased my own sports car, which became a personal passion project. Modifying it was a way for me to express my creativity and refine my eye for detail. Regularly attending Cars & Coffee events with the car eventually led me to discover photography — capturing cars on my phone, chasing angles and perspectives, and seeing the automotive world through a lens for the first time.

Curiosity quickly became purpose. Armed with a camera in hand and a legacy of photography in my family, I threw myself into the craft — learning through experimentation, persistence, and practice. Early connections I’d made through having my own sports car allowed me access to supercars far sooner than most other emerging photographers. Along with my own project car, these exotic vehicles became the perfect playground to hone my skills and develop a photographic style unique to me.

Eighteen months into my journey, I stepped trackside for the first time with media access at a local tarmac rally — my introduction to motorsport photography. The experience had me hooked immediately, taking me back to those childhood memories in the passenger seat — the sounds, the smells, the speed, and the eye-catching styling of the cars. What followed was a rapid immersion into the racing world.

Since that day, I’ve photographed events including GT World Challenge Australia, Adelaide Motorsport Festival, Formula 4 Australia, and V8 Supercars, capturing the energy of racing, the people who make it happen, and the moments that define each event — all with the goal of sharing that same thrill I first felt as a child in the passenger seat.

Client Success Stories: Hear What Our Clients Say

Jay was amazing to work with. Extremely professional, creative, and easygoing. He did a photoshoot for us at Lotus Cars Perth, and we ended up using the images for promotional purposes.

Some of the photos were even selected for a WA photography award, which says it all.

The whole process was smooth, we bounced ideas off each other easily, and he delivered a great range of shots that were exactly what we were after. I couldn’t recommend him enough!

- Lotus Dealership, Perth

An exceptional experience from start to finish. Shooting my Aston Martin AM6 and Ferrari 488 GTB isn’t exactly easy, but Jay absolutely nailed it. The attention to detail, lighting, and angles was spot on—every shot captured the character and presence of both cars perfectly.

Beyond the technical skill, the shoot itself was relaxed and professional, with great creative input that really elevated the final images.

The results exceeded my expectations, and the photos genuinely look magazine-worthy. If you’re looking for a photographer who truly understands high-end cars and knows how to make them look their best, I couldn’t recommend Jay more highly.

OUR MISSION

Where speed, design, and storytelling meet.

At Downshift Media, our mission is to capture the emotion, craftsmanship, and culture behind automotive and motorsport photography.

We believe cars are more than machines, they’re personal, expressive, and often deeply tied to the people who build, drive, and admire them. Through considered composition, timing, and storytelling, our goal is to create imagery that feels authentic, cinematic, and timeless.

Whether it’s a single car, a race weekend, or a piece of content shared online, every shoot is approached with the same intent: to tell a story that reflects the passion behind the wheel.
